Perennial Care
Most ponds in the Northeast will go through an algae cycle every year, as pond temperatures warm and stabilize. Maintaining a healthy ecosystem is the only way to control algae. Healthy ecosystems are balanced with appropriate amounts of colonized bacteria, sufficient aquatic and marginal plants, and a few friendly fish. Pond winterization should begin when all the leaves have fallen from the trees. Remove all the leaves and twigs from the pond, cut back hardy aquatic plants, remove the pump from the skimmer box and store it in a frost-free locations. Remove and rinse filter mats and bags of biological media from the biofalls and store in a garage or shed. Please call our Maintenance Division for assistance with spring start-up and fall shut-down procedures. |

Each pond we install is a living ecosystem as unique in itself as a pond
created in Nature. The key to maintaining a healthy ecosystem is to
understand it’s basic elements. The elements in your pond are
comprised of a circulation system that includes a pump and
connective pipes, a filtration system that includes a skimmer box and
biofalls, aquatic plants, aquatic animals, rocks and gravel. Each
element works together to keep the ecosystem in balance. Algae
problems are most often the result of an unbalanced ecosystem, and
generally subside in 2-6 weeks as your plants, fish and bacteria
establish themselves.
